Baghdad, 10 March,2024
The Tigris River Protectors Association intends to launch the activities of Iraqi Water Week 2024, an annual initiative organized by the association, from March 14 to 22. This year’s event represents a significant departure from previous experiences, as it attempts to move into the pressure phase for the urgent implementation of concrete solutions to Iraq’s pressing water challenges.
Under the slogan “The Year of Alternatives and Solutions,” Iraqi Water Week 2024 faces an important turning point. Although the past years have witnessed reflections on important milestones, such as the passage of more than twenty years since the promises and statements that accompanied regime change in Iraq, the focus this year is firmly on action. It calls on successive governments to re-evaluate current plans supporting the environment and water sector, while recognizing the urgent need for sustainable practices and policies.
Iraqi Water Week 2024 emphasizes the crucial role of financial allocations, moral and technical support, especially highlighting the importance of youth participation. However, this event also serves as an important reminder of the risks faced by environmental rights defenders in Iraq, where speaking out against environmental injustice can pose serious risks.
As we embark on reconstruction campaigns, it is essential that environmental considerations are integrated at every level, as large-scale projects, such as housing initiatives, should not only allocate resources to support the environmental sector, but also undergo rigorous environmental impact assessments to minimize damage.
Iraqi Water Week 2024 is more than just an annual event, but rather a call to action. It serves as a platform for advocacy, resource mobilization and collaboration among stakeholders. It calls on governments, organizations and individuals alike to prioritize protecting Iraq’s water resources and commit to a sustainable future for all.
